Chapter 58 Phase 2. Evolution (5). Blood.

The shattered remnants of the floating island groaned beneath Ethan and Trevor, the weight of their near-death battle pressing down on the broken earth. The boys lay sprawled, their bodies ravaged by Estril's sadistic assault. Ethan's red hair was matted with blood, his breaths shallow and labored. Trevor lay beside him, barely conscious, his once-white hair now streaked with dirt and dried blood. Their spirit beasts, Angitia and Apole, were little more than shadowy whispers of their former selves, writhing weakly beside their masters.@@@@

As the wind howled through the floating ruins, Ethan felt the weight of despair closing in, his vision blurring, blackness seeping into the edges of his consciousness. The ground beneath them cracked ominously, pieces of rock crumbling and drifting into the abyss below. It felt like the end.

And then it came—an otherworldly voice that rang clear in their minds, sharp and commanding.

Before either of them could comprehend what was happening, their vision went black. They were plunged into a void, the battlefield dissolving around them, and in its place was something far more terrifying.

...

Ethan and Trevor stood in a surreal world, suspended in a vast ocean of blood. The ground beneath them was soft and pulsating, as though it were alive, while the sky above was a swirling vortex of crimson and black, churning like a storm ready to burst. A heavy, metallic scent hung in the air, thick and suffocating, each breath they took filled with the raw essence of blood.

Ethan looked down at his hands, now unscathed and whole, but something was deeply wrong. His body felt different, heavier, and his skin tingled as if it were vibrating with a power not his own. Trevor, standing beside him, glanced around warily, his eyes wide with confusion. They were healed, yet something far more disturbing was happening.

"Where are we?" Trevor's voice was barely a whisper, trembling as he stared out at the endless blood-red sea.

Before Ethan could respond, the ground beneath them began to shift and twist. From the depths of the blood, figures began to rise—dark, grotesque shapes that resembled neither beast nor man. Faceless, their bodies were warped, dripping with blood as they crawled toward the boys, their jagged limbs stretching unnaturally.

A surge of primal fear shot through Ethan, but before he could react, something deep inside him stirred. A violent pull, as though his very soul was being dragged toward the blood-soaked creatures. He gasped, clutching his chest as an intense, searing pain shot through his entire body.

Trevor doubled over beside him, letting out a strangled cry. The agony was overwhelming, their bones cracking and reforming, muscles tearing apart only to regenerate stronger. Their veins bulged, filled with molten fire, every nerve alight with unimaginable torment. Blood—not their own—seemed to fill their bodies, forcing itself into every cell, every fiber of their being.

Then it hit them both at once—an overwhelming hunger. A bloodlust so intense it nearly drove them mad. Ethan's mouth watered, his newly formed fangs aching for something to sink into. Trevor's vision blurred as the need for blood clouded his thoughts. It wasn't just hunger; it was a violent, all-consuming rage.

Their senses sharpened, and they caught the scent of something nearby—familiar, yet tantalizing. They turned their heads, eyes locking onto the lifeless body of Elder Estril, his form still intact, though his head was severed from his neck.

Without a word, the boys moved, driven by instinct more than thought. They reached Estril's body and, with a terrifying hunger, tore into his flesh. Their fangs sank deep into his cold skin, and they drank deeply of his blood. It was unlike anything they had ever tasted—rich, powerful, filled with the essence of a being far older and stronger than any human. The more they drank, the more their bodies surged with energy, the last vestiges of pain fading as the blood healed and strengthened them.

For a moment, they were nothing but animals, feeding on their prey, their minds lost in a haze of bloodlust. But as the hunger slowly ebbed, they pulled back, their faces and hands stained with Estril's blood, their chests rising and falling with heavy breaths.

The anger that had burned so brightly inside them simmered down, replaced by a cold, terrifying clarity. They had changed. They were no longer the same boys who had fought on this island. Something far darker and more dangerous had awakened within them.

As the island around them continued to crumble, Ethan and Trevor stood, their bodies pulsing with new strength, their eyes glowing faintly in the dim light. The power of their evolution was sealed, but they could feel it—just beneath the surface, waiting to be unleashed.

They exchanged a glance, wordless but filled with understanding.

Whatever they had become, the world was not ready for it. And neither were they.
