Chapter 291: Story 291: The Betrayal

As Damien and Mira trekked through the remains of an old city, once grand and vibrant, they stumbled upon a convoy of survivors. Damien’s instincts flared with caution, but Mira’s hopeful expression softened his defenses. "Maybe they’re friendly," she said, nudging him gently. "Not everyone’s our enemy."

The leader of the convoy, a rugged man named Armand, welcomed them warmly. His piercing eyes and calm demeanor seemed trustworthy, and after hours of wandering, the prospect of safety in numbers was tempting. Armand’s group had weapons, rations, and even a medic—a luxury Damien hadn’t seen since before the fall.

As dusk settled, Armand invited them to join a makeshift campfire. Mira laughed with the others, a sound Damien hadn’t heard in months. His unease lifted, and for the first time in a long while, he allowed himself to relax.

Hours later, as the group dispersed to their tents, Mira leaned close to Damien, her fingers brushing his. "It feels like a dream, doesn’t it?"

Damien nodded, his gaze fixed on the flickering embers. "Yeah. Almost too good to be true."

Seizing the chaos, Damien managed to slip his bindings with a sharp rock and freed Mira. Together, they fought off both the undead and Armand’s men in a whirlwind of fists and fury. In the melee, Damien took back his weapon and aimed it at Armand, who stumbled back, fear replacing his smug confidence.

"You don’t leave people for dead and expect to live," Damien growled before knocking Armand unconscious.

With dawn breaking, the surviving undead wandered aimlessly, and the remaining convoy members fled, leaving only Damien and Mira standing amidst the ruins. She looked at him, eyes filled with sorrow and apology. "I was wrong about them."

Damien softened, touching her shoulder. "We trusted them because we wanted to believe there was good left in this world. Next time, we’ll be smarter. Together."

The two walked on, the bond between them deepened by the night’s betrayal, each more resolute than ever to survive—and to trust only each other.
