Chapter 356 Story 356: The Onyx Gate
The chamber trembled as the growl grew louder, resonating through the cavernous room like a harbinger of doom. Zara's fingers froze over the console, her gaze snapping to Callum, who had already raised his rifle, scanning the shadows.
"We don't have time for this," Zara muttered, her frustration boiling beneath her calm exterior. She keyed in the last sequence on the console, and with a hiss of hydraulics, a hidden passage on the far side of the chamber began to open, revealing a massive door adorned with glowing runes.
"That doesn't look like freedom," Callum remarked, his voice tense.
"It's our only way out," Zara replied, holstering her pistol and readying her knife. "Cover me. We're moving."
Before Callum could respond, the ground beneath them cracked, and a grotesque form emerged—a towering abomination of sinew and bone, its head crowned with twisted antlers. Its eyeless face turned toward Zara, sensing her movements. With an ear-piercing screech, it lunged.
"Move!" Zara barked, rolling to the side as the creature's massive claw slammed into the ground, narrowly missing her. Callum unleashed a volley of bullets, each one tearing into the beast's thick hide but failing to slow it down.
"Got it!" Callum exclaimed, lowering his rifle.
But Zara didn't celebrate. Her focus shifted to the now fully revealed door, its runes pulsing ominously. "This isn't over," she muttered, striding toward it.
As they approached, the door began to hum, and a chilling wind swept through the chamber. Zara reached out, placing her gloved hand on the cold surface. The runes flared, and the door creaked open, revealing a swirling void of black and blue light.
Callum hesitated. "Are we seriously going in there?"
Zara glanced back at him, her expression resolute. "Do you have a better idea?"
Without waiting for an answer, she stepped into the void, her figure disappearing into the unknown. Callum cursed under his breath before following, the door sealing shut behind them.
Whatever lay ahead, Zara knew one thing—this was only the beginning of a darker, deadlier journey.@@@@
