Chapter 364 Story 364: The Gauntlet
The sharp blare of alarms echoed through the steel corridors, chasing Zara Kincaid as she sprinted down the narrow hallways. The USB drive, now securely tucked into the tactical pouch on her belt, felt heavier than it should have. She wasn't just carrying data—she was carrying proof, leverage, and a target on her back.
"Zara, you've got company," Vex's voice crackled in her earpiece, laced with urgency. "Heat signatures are converging on your position. They're sealing exits. You need to move fast."
"I'm already running," Zara muttered, her voice breathless.
Ahead, the corridor split into two paths. The left led toward the hangar bay, her original extraction route, but the sound of heavy boots growing louder made it clear it wasn't an option anymore. She veered right, darting into a darker, less traversed passageway.
The lights above flickered ominously as she slowed her pace, scanning her surroundings. The passage was a maintenance shaft, littered with exposed pipes and abandoned equipment. It wasn't on the official blueprints, but that might work to her advantage.
"Vex, where does this lead?"@@@@
"Unknown," he replied, furiously typing. "It's off the grid. But if it's not monitored, it might buy you some time. I'll guide you the best I can."
She moved silently, circling behind the trio as they pushed forward. She used the pipes and machinery as cover, her movements calculated and precise. When the rear guard passed her position, she struck.
Her blade flashed as she took him out with a swift, silent strike to his neck. She caught his body before it hit the ground and dragged it into the shadows.
The other two mercenaries noticed his absence too late. Zara tossed a wrench across the hall, the clanging sound drawing their attention. As they turned, she fired twice—clean, controlled shots that dropped them instantly.
"Zara, the hangar is compromised," Vex's voice cut in again. "You'll need to improvise an extraction."
"I've been improvising all night," Zara quipped, checking the ammo in her Glock. "What's one more detour?"
Ahead, the passage opened into a maintenance hatch leading outside. She stepped through into the cold night air, her senses on high alert. The Syndicate wouldn't let her escape easily, but Zara Kincaid didn't survive this long by playing it safe.
This was just the beginning.
