Chapter 420 Story 420: The Lure of the Lanterns

The corridor stretched endlessly ahead, illuminated only by a line of dim lanterns placed at irregular intervals. The flickering glow cast eerie, dancing shadows on the jagged rock walls, giving the impression that the tunnel itself was alive and breathing.

"This doesn't feel right," Viper said, her voice barely audible as she stepped cautiously forward, her weapon at the ready.

"Stay sharp," Rook replied, scanning the tunnel with his flashlight. The beam seemed almost swallowed by the oppressive darkness ahead.

The air was heavy, carrying a strange scent—damp earth mixed with an almost metallic tang. Ghost knelt by one of the lanterns, inspecting it carefully.

"These aren't old," she muttered, running a gloved finger over the glass. "Someone's been here recently. Maybe still is."

Shadow's eyes darted around, her sniper rifle held tight. "Or something. These creatures are smarter than we give them credit for."

The team moved deeper into the tunnel, their boots crunching on the uneven gravel. The lanterns seemed to pulse faintly, as though guiding them forward.

"This feels like a trap," Bulwark grumbled, his massive frame making him almost scrape against the narrow walls.

"Agreed," Rook said, his voice steady despite the unease settling over the group. "But we don't have another option. The path behind us is too risky. We stick to the plan—find the source of this interference and destroy it."

"We can't hold them off forever!" Viper shouted, her blades slicing through an attacker that got too close.

"We don't need forever," Rook said, aiming his shotgun at the heart-like structure. "We just need to take that thing out."

"Whatever it is, it's tied to these creatures," Ghost said. "Destroy it, and we might have a chance."

"Then cover me," Rook barked, breaking into a sprint toward the pulsating structure.

As the team fought desperately to keep the creatures at bay, Rook reached the base of the structure. He placed an explosive charge, the timer ticking down as he retreated.

"Fall back!" he yelled.

The team sprinted toward the tunnel, the roar of the creatures growing louder. The explosion tore through the cavern, the light from the blast blinding.

When the dust settled, the creatures were gone, and the lanterns had gone dark. The pulsating hum was no more.

But as the team regrouped, Ghost stared at her scanner, her face pale.

"The interference is gone," she said. "But something bigger just woke up."@@@@
