Chapter 425 Story 425: The Chapel of Shadows

The crumbling chapel loomed over the desolate graveyard, its spire piercing the ominous sky like a blade. The faint toll of a bell echoed through the mist, though no one could see a bell tower. The team stood at the wrought-iron gate, its hinges rusted and its surface marked with deep claw-like scratches.

"This place reeks of death," Bulwark muttered, his heavy weapon at the ready.

"Death would be a mercy compared to what's lurking here," Ghost replied, her tone as cold as the air around them. She pointed toward the chapel doors, slightly ajar. "Movement inside. Something's waiting for us."

Rook gestured for the team to advance. "Stay tight. No unnecessary noise."

The group crept through the graveyard, the ground soft beneath their boots as if the earth itself had grown tired of holding the dead. Faint whispers surrounded them again, this time clearer, almost chanting in a language none of them understood. The gravestones bore names long eroded, their inscriptions lost to time.

As they reached the chapel's entrance, Shadow paused, her sharp eyes narrowing. "Symbols carved into the door," she whispered. "Looks like runes—dark magic." Enjoy more content from My Virtual Library Empire

Viper ran her gloved fingers over the marks. "These aren't just runes. They're seals, keeping something locked inside—or keeping us out."

"Whatever it is, we need to find out," Rook said. He pushed the doors open slowly, the creak echoing through the hollow chapel.

"We need to take out the source!" Shadow shouted, aiming at the altar. "It's channeling energy from that thing!"

Viper sprinted toward the altar, dodging swiping shadows and leaping over broken pews. She plunged her blade into the dark substance, disrupting the energy flow. The creature let out an ear-splitting screech, and the wraiths faltered.

"Finish it!" Rook ordered.

Shadow fired a perfectly placed shot, shattering the void-like face of the angel in the stained glass. The creature howled as it and the wraiths disintegrated into ash.

The chapel fell silent, but the sense of foreboding lingered.

"This was just the beginning," Ghost said, her voice steady despite the tension. "Whatever this 'master' is, it's still out there."

Rook nodded. "We move forward. This ends here."

With the shadows dissipated, the team stepped out of the chapel, the graveyard eerily quiet. But in the distance, the faint toll of the bell echoed once more, beckoning them toward their next trial.
