Chapter 431: Story 431: Secrets in the Dark
The team pushed deeper into the labyrinthine library, their boots echoing against the ancient stone floors. The faint glow of flickering lanterns barely illuminated the endless rows of bookshelves, casting long, dancing shadows that seemed alive.
"Stay sharp," Rook whispered, his voice low but commanding. "This place isn’t done with us yet."
Ghost scouted ahead, his movements silent as a wraith. He paused at an ornate iron gate that led to another chamber, its intricate carvings depicting battles between celestial beings and monstrous creatures. The air felt heavier here, almost suffocating.
"This door’s been sealed for centuries," Ghost said, running his fingers over the faintly glowing sigils etched into the metal.
"It’s a dead end?" Shadow asked, keeping her sniper rifle trained on the darkened corners of the room.
"Not quite," Viper said, stepping forward with the ancient tome in hand. "These sigils match some of the symbols in the book. It’s a locking mechanism, probably tied to a ward."
"Probably?" Bulwark grunted, adjusting his massive grenade launcher.
"Let me work," Viper shot back, flipping through the tome’s fragile pages. The arcane text glowed faintly, and as she recited a passage, the sigils on the gate began to pulse in unison.
Shadow fired a round into the creature’s chest, but it only seemed to enrage it further. Bulwark moved to intercept, unloading a grenade at point-blank range. The blast staggered the beast, but it didn’t fall. Explore stories at novelhall.Côm
"Hold it off!" Viper shouted, her voice tinged with urgency. She finished the incantation, and the iron gate groaned as it swung open.
"Fall back!" Rook ordered.
The team sprinted through the gate, the creatures hot on their heels. As soon as they crossed the threshold, Viper slammed the book shut. The gate sealed itself with a deafening clang, and the creatures’ furious roars faded into silence.
The team collapsed against the walls of the new chamber, catching their breath.
"What now?" Ghost asked, his tone wary.
Rook looked around. The chamber was vast, its walls lined with even more ancient tomes and artifacts. At its center stood a pedestal, atop which rested a glowing crystal sphere.
"Now," Rook said, "we find out what we just walked into."
