Chapter 457: Story 457: The Abyssal Passage
Emerging from the portal, the team found themselves in an entirely different world—a seemingly endless, water-filled tunnel. The arched stone ceiling stretched far into the horizon, lit by an eerie blue glow that reflected off the surface of the water. The air was cold and damp, carrying a faint metallic tang that set their nerves on edge.
"This place..." Shadow muttered, her voice low but tense. "It feels ancient, like it’s been here for centuries, untouched."
Rook took a step forward, the water splashing around his boots. The ripples extended unnaturally far, as though the tunnel were alive and responding to their presence. "Eyes up. We don’t know what’s waiting for us down here."
The team moved cautiously, their formation tight. Ghost took point, his silenced pistol ready for anything lurking in the shadows. Shadow followed closely, her sniper rifle held low but prepared to react in an instant. Viper and Bulwark took the flanks, while Rook held the center, his sharp gaze scanning the environment for any signs of danger.
The sound of rushing water grew louder as they advanced, accompanied by an occasional distant echo—a sound that was neither entirely mechanical nor organic.
"Commander," Ghost whispered, pausing and pointing toward the wall. "These carvings—look familiar?" Discover more stories at novelhall.Côm
Rook stepped closer, inspecting the symbols etched into the damp stone. They were similar to the ones in the previous chamber but more intricate, spiraling into patterns that seemed almost hypnotic.
Viper dashed to the side, narrowly avoiding the creature’s snapping jaws. She drove her blade into its exposed underbelly, drawing a shriek of pain. Shadow took the opportunity to line up a shot, her rifle’s scope glowing faintly in the dim light.
"Hold it steady!" she called out.
Rook and Ghost worked in unison, firing at the creature’s joints to slow its movements. Shadow’s shot rang out, piercing one of its glowing eyes. The creature thrashed wildly, slamming into the walls of the tunnel and dislodging chunks of stone.
With a final, coordinated attack, the team brought the beast down, its massive body sinking into the water with a gurgling roar.
"Is it dead?" Viper asked, catching her breath.
"For now," Rook said grimly. "But this tunnel isn’t done with us yet. Let’s move before more of them show up."
The team pressed on, their weapons ready, the faint glow of the tunnel guiding them deeper into the unknown.
