I had to run away multiple times and be a coward or use my own monsters at meat shields, but I was winning.

I was getting EXP and leveling up, over and over again.

Before long, I managed to complete the quest!

I may have lagged a lot in terms of levels behind all others players, both the players that started with me as well as from different locations, but not anymore.
